“The central struggle of parenthood is to let our hopes for our children outweigh our fears.”
Dr. Buerger is the leader in her profession and has developed the most comprehensive program nationwide dedicated to caring for those with neurodevelopmental conditions. She is a certified DAN! (Defeat Autism Now!) practitioner (www.autism.com) and is the founder of the Intersect4kids program; a Neurodevelopmental Certification Program for doctors (www.intersect4kids.com).
About Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ND’s)
Neurodevelopmental Disorders are essentially a disruption of the brain which results in gaps, delays, or variations in the way a child’s brain & nervous system develops. Currently, one in six children in the United States is said to have a neurodevelopmental disorder. The most common are: Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD); this includes Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disorder (LD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and Various Psychiatric Disorders. Children with ND’s have difficulty processing incoming sensory input to the brain. This neurological disorganization can occur in three different ways: 1) the brain does not receive messages due to a disconnection in the nerve cells 2) sensory messages are received inconsistently; or 3) sensory messages are received consistently, but do not connect properly with other sensory messages. When the brain processes sensory messages poorly; inefficient motor, academic, or emotional output is the result.
Prevention & Early Detection
Dr. Buerger works with typically developing children to ensure that should any deviation from norm occur, it is detected early. Early detection and intervention play a key role in allowing the nervous system to heal at its maximum functional level. When a child enters our program with atypical development and/or a ND, Dr. Buerger explores all areas and time lines in which the nervous system was disrupted. Thus, she works to “remove” the road blocks that were put in place at that particular time and “restore” the nervous system back to health.
Contributing Factors of Neurodevelopmental DisordersBirth Trauma: cesarean sections, forceps, suction devices, prolonged or rapid labor, induction, anesthetics Environmental Exposures: pesticides, herbicides, neurotoxins in foods (dyes, preservatives, artificial sweeteners), household cleaning products Epigenetics: click here to read article by Dr. Buerger Genetics Vertebral Subluxations
About our program:
At Eagle Canyon Wellness & Sensory Development Center, we offer hope to children and parents that are coping with a neurodevelopmental disorder. We also work with adults that have suffered a stroke or have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD/HD, OCD, anxiety and various other conditions. Our developingMINDS program combines optimum nutrition, neurology, neurointegrative exercises, cranial-sacral/myofascial techniques, and chiropractic together in order for children or adults with Neurodevelopmental Disorders to achieve their maximum life potential. Our program is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure neurodevelopmental disorders; including that of autism. The focus of our program is to naturally support the neuroimmune, neurogastric, neuromuscular, and neurobiomechanical systems to allow maximum innate human expression. Individuals presenting with neurodevelopmental disorders are known to have one or more of these systems operating at some level of dysfunction.
Dr. Buerger takes into consideration the child’s neonatal development/environment, birth history, and their early health history as well as their current presentation. There is a profound amount of research that tells us that endotoxins from in utero exposure play a large role in the development of a child’s nervous and immune systems; thus, making them more susceptible to neurodevelopmental issues later in life. Further exposure to exotoxins from the environment, foods, and vaccines can add continued insult to the child’s nervous and immune systems. Common findings in these children in the first year(s) of life may be: cranky, colicky, picky eaters, frequent gastro-intestinal upset, difficulty sleeping, frequent/chronic infections, asthma, allergies, etc. Because children have immature detoxification mechanisms, these toxins stay “lodged” in the tissues; primarily of the gut and the brain, causing continued “chaos” of the immune and nervous system. Approximately 80% of the immune system is housed in the gut and chronic inflammation in the gut leads to chronic inflammation of the entire body, including the brain.
Many children with a ND are stuck with the “gas pedal” of their nervous system stuck to the floor; they have poor “autonomic control” of their nervous system. This means that they are in “fight or flight” mode and have a difficult time shutting down. This in turn will continue to stress the adrenal glands and the immune system and lead to common ailments we see in this population group: asthma, allergies, eczema, chronic sinus/ear infections, etc. Chiropractic care is a vital cornerstone of treatment to help balance the “gas and brake pedal” of the nervous system and must be considered so that healing can begin.
Our program is dedicated to removing developmental “road blocks” such as spinal subluxations, persistent primitive reflexes and neurotoxins and replacing them with “brain building” processes such as neurointegrative exercises, neuromovement therapy, primitive reflex integration, proper nutrition, and specific supplements. We also provide Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments (mHBOT) in appropriate cases. Dr. Buerger has found that by addressing all areas that could be contributing to developmental delays and/or neurodevelopmental disorders, the greatest the level of neurological function can be obtained.
